COURSE AIM:
To equip students with knowledge and skills in Surgery and Surgical Nursing including basic principles of operating theatre nursing and effects of anaesthetic agents on patients.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Define terms and concepts used in surgery.
- Describe the principles of surgery and surgical nursing in the three phases of care
- Apply principles of operating theatre nursing in the Intra-operative care
- Describe the common surgical conditions affecting various systems of the body.
- Apply the appropriate nursing model in the management of patients with surgical conditions.
- Utilize available resources for rehabilitation of patients, including referral to appropriate organizations.
- Apply the knowledge of first aid in the management of emergencies.
- Apply principles of operating theatre nursing in the Intra-operative care
- Demonstrate knowledge of managing operating theatre procedures
- Identify types of incisions commonly used in surgery
- Apply the appropriate positions used in theatre
